Llamas are clean and intelligent. They make outstanding pets. Their
personalities are more like cats than dogs, horses or other livestock.
Llamas are quiet, peaceful animals and make soft humming sounds to communicate.
Llamas can pack, guard, cart and play. They provide companionship
and therapy.
Llamas are indigenous to the high Andes of the South American countries
of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. There are around 110,000 in North America.
There are also llama ranches in various countries of Europe, Australia,
New Zealand, and in the middle east.
Llamas are classified as livestock in most jurisdictions. They come
in a variety of colors, including: white, black, brown, gray, red and any
combination of these colors.
Llamas are easy to raise, can be handled by anyone and are safe around
children.
Llamas are in the same family with Alpacas, Guanacos and
Vicuna. Camels (one-humped or two) are cousins. And, although the
llamas have some similarity to camels, they have a much better temperament and
are easier to handle.
